The National Youth Service (NYS) has announced a new recruitment drive in the country, with over 700 job vacancies for young Kenyans. According to a notice issued on March 3, the agency is seeking to hire 250 cadet officers and 500 private officers. This could be a lifeline for hundreds of unemployed youth in the country.

The agency announced that it is seeking to hire degree holders in professional fields to become cadet officers. These include engineers, accountants, auditors, supply chain officers, ICT officers, clinical officers, laboratory technologists, project management officers, economists, marketing officers, corporate communication officers, agricultural and veterinary officers, hydrologists, chaplains, legal officers, and registered community health nurses.

Applicants seeking to join the agency as cadet officers should have a Bachelor’s degree in professional fields such as human resource management, public administration, library and information science, sports science, physical education, or community development. Also, applicants should be Kenyan citizens aged between 18 and 28 years with a valid ID and KRA PIN certificate.

Successful candidates will also be required to undergo 9 months of paramilitary training and be medically fit.

On the private side, NYS is seeking 500 officers for technical and support staff positions. This includes 70 drivers, 80 plant operators, 30 masons, 10 electricians, 15 carpenters, 10 plumbers, 30 band members, 10 agriculture officers, 20 secretaries, 20 panel beaters, 25 vehicle mechanics, 20 welders, and 160 general duty personnel.

Interested candidates seeking employment at the private sector NYS need at least a D+ in KCSE or its equivalent. Candidates also need to have undergone initial NYS paramilitary training and need to be holders of a trade test certificate, craft certificate, or a diploma certificate. Additionally, candidates need to meet the medical and criminal requirements.

Interested candidates are required to download the official Application Form for Employment from the Public Service Commission official website. Completed forms need to be submitted via email or posted to the NYS Commandant General at the NYS headquarters in Nairobi.

The forms need to be submitted by March 18, 2026.
